The Rees Theater, located at 100 N. Michigan Street,
is a stunning Art Deco style single screen movie theater.
Built in 1865 by Amzi Wheeler, the design was originally
Italianate. Before becoming a theater, the building was
a furniture store and undertaking establishment.
In 1939, the theatre was renovated by Stewart Rees,
giving the building its Art Deco facade. When he
renovated the building, Stewart Rees also built a
“State of the Art” apartment on the upper floor for
his wife and him. “Remember the Night” was the
movie that was showing for the grand opening.
Right now, the 400-seat theater is available for
purchase for some that are interested in it.
